Since being elected to Council in 2004 I have focused on heritage, bikes, trees and the Cooks River.
Marrickville is lucky to have a good stock of relatively intact heritage buildings. Development places continual pressure on these wonderful old buildings. I want to preserve our built heritage and only approve developments that adaptively reuse existing heritage buildings.
There is a mini-renaissance in cycling and I hope Council will be able to provide infrastructure to help bikers ride further, safely. I am very excited about Marrickville’s new Bicycle Strategy. This Bicycle Strategy will guide Council’s bike works program for the next decade and will deliver safer, more direct, comfortable, attractive cycling.
Trees are an obvious area of concern for Greens Councillors. Marrickville should be one of the “leafy suburbs” and I am a firm believer in increasing Marrickville’s tree canopy.
The Cooks River is a great feature in Marrickville’s landscape. In the past it has been neglected or treated as an industrial sewer. This attitude can no longer be sustained and the river needs to be seen as a major environmental and recreational corridor; a place of natural beauty.
