Dimitrios has lived in Dulwich Hill since early childhood, after both his parents established businesses in the area in the early 1970s.
He went to school locally before achieving a bachelor's degree in Dental Surgery from Sydney University in 1995. After graduation, Dimitrios spent two years working as a dentist in rural NSW. His work with indigenous communities during this time inspired a long term commitment and he continues to take time from his own practice each year to volunteer his professional services to remote communities around Australia.
Dimitrios established The Smile Shop (now known as the Smile Spot) in Dulwich Hill in 1997, and the following year was elected President of the Dulwich Hill Chamber of Commerce, playing an integral role in establishing the local Mainstreet program in 1999.
He was first elected as an Independent Councillor for Marrickville in 1999, and was re-elected in 2004. Dimitrios served a stint as Deputy Mayor before being elected Mayor in September 2007.
Dimitrios’s involvement in local politics stems from his belief that everyone should have a fair go at being involved in the decisions that govern us – particularly at this level. He stands as an Independent because he feels that it is vital for people to have representation outside of traditional political organisations.
He supports the provision of high-quality services and facilities to the residents of Marrickville.
He supports the revitalisation of Enmore pool through the construction of a new 50-metre indoor pool facility at Enmore Park, to include a child-minding facility, program pool for the elderly, children’s play pool, gymnasium and modern changing rooms.
He also supports upgrading Council’s Petersham pool facility once Enmore Pool is completed.
Other projects he supports include a New Library at the old Marrickville Hospital site (Cnr of Livingstone Rd and Marrickville Rd), the expansion of Council’s Childcare facilities through the construction of a new childcare centre at Marrickville West Public School for approximately 60 children, and the provision of out of hours care facilities for children at our local primary schools.
Dimitrios also believes that Council has an obligation to provide services to the elderly and is a vocal supporter of Council’s ageing strategy. In particular he would like to see “drop in centres” created to provide opportunities for the aged to get out of their homes, pursue new hobbies, meet new people and participate in a range of new experiences.
Most importantly Dimitrios believes that local Councillors should focus on local issues rather than national or international politics.
