Alternative Waste Disposal

There is some waste that Council will not accept in any of their bins or in the booked waste collection. Council facilitates a number of alternative waste collection options, including:

More information on these and other local organisations involved in alternative waste disposal, can be found below.

There is also a full list of alternative waste items and disposal locations. Alternatively, contact Council's Resource Recovery Officer on 9335 2222.

Skip Bin Hire

If you need to hire a skip (waste container) to collect construction waste you must obtain a permit to place the bin on a road, lane or footpath. Permits are free for less than 7 days. To obtain a permit first arrange hire of your bin from one of the approved companies - you will find the list in the download box at the bottom of this page.

If placed on the public roadway, skips must comply will all of the normal road rules. They should not be placed where they pose a safety hazard to pedestrians or vehicles.

Asbestos Disposal

If you wish to dispose of asbestos, please visit WSN Solutions or phone 1300 651 116 for more information.

Current waste charges

Rockdale Transfer Station at Lindsay Street will accept most types of garbage. Charges will vary dependant on what it is you want to dispose of.  Find out WSN Solutions' current waste charges.

Sump Oil Recycling Station

Do you have used motor oil at home that you need to dispose of? If so, all you need to do is pour your oil back into an empty oil container and take it to Marrickville Council’s Sump Oil Recycling Station.

In 2009, the Sump Oil Recycling Station will operate from 10am-2pm on the following dates and locations:

Help Marrickville Council to recover and re-use as much oil as possible. Your used oil will be cleaned and re-used, helping to conserve a valuable resource and protect the environment.

Alternative arrangements to drop off oil can be made by contacting Council’s Waste Education Officer on 9335 2222.

Battery Recycling

Marrickville Council has launched a battery recycling initiative in response to increasing community and government concern to recycle general purpose alkaline (non rechargeable) and rechargeable batteries. A battery recycling box is located at Council's Administration Centre and residents are invited to drop their old batteries off for recycling.

Batteries contain a range of environmentally hazardous chemicals including cadmium, mercury, zinc and nickel, all of which are toxic in high concentration. Cadmium in particular is a major pollutant, being absorbed by plants in the soil and entering the food chain.

Once collected, batteries are sorted by type and chemistry. Common general purpose cells (alkaline batteries) are sent to a specialist recycler in Australia where ferrous and non ferrous metals are recovered. Rechargeable batteries are sorted, repackaged and shipped overseas to a licensed recycling facility where the cadmium is recovered and used to manufacture new batteries.  The ferro-nickel is also recycled.

By recycling batteries, you'll help reduce the release of toxic chemicals associated with their disposal to landfill and help create a cleaner and safer environment.

Community sharps - used syringes, needles and lancets

Many people rely on using needles, syringes and lancets to maintain their own health or that of a family member. This material is referred to as community sharps.

The correct disposal of community sharps is of a particular concern to Council.  If they are disposed of incorrectly, they place the health and safety of waste and recycling workers at significant risk.

Community sharps should always be kept secure and seperate from household waste.

Be smart with your sharps and place them in a sharps container or a puncture resistant container (not glass) and dispose of them for FREE at the following pharmacies:

If you find sharps on public property, please report this to the Needle Cleanup Hotline on 1800 633 353.

Fridge Buyback Scheme

Old, inefficient second fridges use large amounts of power; adding on average more than $190 to your annual electricity bill and creating around 1 tonne a year of greenhouse gases.

Fridge Buyback is a residential energy efficiency program that actually pays you to help save the environment and reduce your electricity bills.

Residents with working second fridges they no longer need can call Fridge Buyback on 1800 708 401 during business hours or visit Fridge Buyback's website at www.fridgebuyback.com.au to arrange for their fridge to be collected.

Eligible fridges must be the second fridge in the house, they must be switched on and working.  They must be 250 litres or more in size and 10 or more years old.

Residents will receive:

The program aims to remove 19,000 working second fridges from homes in metropolitan Sydney. Residents participating in Fridge Buyback will avoid over $24 million in electricity bills and help reduce over 150,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions over the next three years. Fridge Buyback is an energy efficiency program supported by the NSW Government's Climate Change Fund.
