Community Gardens
Marrickville Council is encouraging citizens to establish their own community gardens. Community gardens are areas of shared land where members of the community come together to grow fresh food and other plants, to learn sustainability principles, relax and make new friends. Gardens can be located on public open space managed by Council, such as public parks, or private lands, including schools (public and private), churches and community centres. Policy guidelines prepared in November 2007 provide comprehensive advice and support on how to develop and manage a garden. Applications from the community for assistance in establishing a community garden are assessed according to these guidelines. A community garden at Wilkins School in Marrickville has been in operation since 2004. The Lewisham School and Community Garden received support from the 'Our Place' Financial Assistance Program in 2007. In 2007-08 Marrickville Council supported community gardens at Marrickville West Primary School and the Addison Road Centre through the Citizens for Sustainability Program. A proposed community garden at All Saints Church in Petersham received a $5,000 grant under Marrickville Council's 2008 Community Grants Scheme.
