Accessibility

Marrickville Council is strongly committed to ensuring people with a disability have equal opportunity to take part in local activities and have fair access to Council and community programs, services and resources.

In working to achieve this, Council maintains planning controls to guide provision of access and mobility in developments and upgrades to existing buildings, facilitates an access committee to address barrier to access and mobility in Council and the community, and works to assist local businesses in complying with Disability Discrimination Act legislation. Council views these provisions as a response to basic and fundamental human rights and social justice.

Access upgrades and restorative works for Newtown Town Hall

Council recently completed significant upgrade works at Newtown Town Hall to provide universal access to the ground and first floors of this iconic heritage listed building.

The upgrade works included the installation of a new passenger lift to access the first floor, restorations to the roof, ceiling and stair, internal repaint, new flooring and fit out to accommodate new accessible washroom and kitchen facilities. Alterations to the Newtown Town Square footpath were also carried out to provide grade access to the front foyer of the building.

The upgrade provides the broader community equal access to all areas of this building, enhancing the valuable social and recreational services that are currently on offer at the facility.
