Under section 62(1) of the Companion Animals Act 1998, animals seized under the authority of that Act, must cause the seized animal to be delivered as soon as possible to its owner, to a Council pound or to any approved premises.
Under section 62A(1) of the Companion Animals Act 1998, an approved premise is any premises (other than a Council pound) operated by an approved person.
Council encourages citizens to contact an approved premise in the event they have found a dog . An authorised person at the approved premise will scan the dog for a microchip and facilitate re-uniting the dog with its owner. This process minimises the stress placed on the dog by reducing the time it is away from its owner.
Refer to the local veterinary hospitals page for a list of approved premises.
