Garbage

Marrickville Council provides a weekly household garbage collection service to houses and units in the Marrickville Local Government Area. The household garbage collection service is part of a comprehensive waste strategy designed to assist all residents to maintain a clean and safe local environment.

  • Houses are provided with a 140 litre red lidded bin collected weekly.
  • Units are provided with a 240 litre red lidded bin collected weekly. Each bin is shared between two units.

If you are unsure about which day your waste is collected, download Waste and Recycling Zones (PDF) and follow the simple steps listed below.

What items do not go in my garbage bin?

Please do not place oil/liquids, building material, sawdust or bulky items into your garbage bin. Please do not overfill your garbage bin as it will not be emptied and ensure that your bins are returned to private property within 24 hours of collection. If your bins are not removed from the lane or footpath they will be stickered, formally requesting you to remove them and failure to comply with this could lead to possible legal action in accordance with the Local Government Act 1993.

Where does my garbage go when collected?

On average every household generates approximately 1 tonne of waste per annum. Once collected, Marrickville Council trucks take the waste to the Rockdale Transfer Station, where its is then transported to the Lucas Heights Waste Management Centre. Lucas Heights Waste Management Centre is the second of two major waste facilities that opened in 1998. It is operated and managed by SITA, covering an area of about 300 hectares.

What gets thrown in the bin?

Almost half of your household garbage bin (red lidded bin) is filled with wasted food every week. This equates to throwing away over $1000 per household per year. This wasted food breaks down in our landfills, together with other organic materials, it becomes the main contributor to the generation of methane — a greenhouse gas 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
