Council and Committee Meetings

Marrickville Council has twelve Councillors who are elected every four years to direct and control the affairs of the Council, in accordance with the Local Government Act.

The Councillors review the performance of the Council and its delivery of services, the Council's financial and management plans and its annual budget. Both the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor are elected by the twelve Councillors during the Extraordinary Council Meeting which is held in September of each year. Councillors make decisions regarding policies and programs of the Council at Council and Committee meetings. Effective meetings are a major contributor to good governance and effective Councils.

Council conducts its business and decision-making in formal Council and Committee Meetings. These meetings are open to the public, except in circumstances where Council can exclude the public and the press provided legislative requirements are met. The Local Government Act prescribes the number of council meetings that must be held each year, what constitutes a quorum and when notices of meetings must be given.

Marrickville Council has adopted a Code of Meeting Practice that complies with the various legal requirements of the Act and the Regulations and stipulates the rules for the conduct of meetings.

The framework for meetings is set by a combination of:

  • the Local Government Act 1993;
  • the Local Government (General) Regulation 2005;
  • Council's Code of Meeting Practice;  and
  • Common law.

Council's Administrative Services section is responsible for the administrative functions necessary to ensure all Council and Committee meetings are held in accordance with the various legislative requirements.
