Parks and Reserves

Marrickville Council operates an annual Parks and Reserves capital works program that includes a Parks Improvement Program, a Playground Improvement Program, Parks Infrastructure Program and Major Parks Projects. In 2011-2012, Council will also complete a range of park improvements as part of various State and Australian Government grant programs.

Park Improvement, Playground and Tree Projects

Henson Park Wall Rectification

Structural rectification of the northern brick boundary wall at Henson Park was commenced in June and was completed in September 2012.

Arlington Reserve Upgrade

Community consultation for general park upgrading was conducted in March and April and detailed designs completed. Tender results were reported to Council on 2 October and construction commenced late November with anticipated completion by March 2013. A Community Building Partnership Grant has been received for an electronic scoreboard at Arlington Reserve. The scoreboard installation is to be undertaken as a separate project and coordinated with the upgrade works program.

Aboriginal Interpretation Cooks River Parks Stage 2

Council has received advice of a successful grant application under the Metropolitan Greenspace Program for stage two of the Aboriginal Interpretation in Cooks River Parks project. A report recommending acceptance of the grant has been provided to Council's 4 December meeting. Stage two of the project includes detailed design and installation of interpretation at Steel Park, Warren Park and Richardsons Lookout, based on concept designs prepared in consultation with the local Aboriginal community in 2011. Designs will be finalised in consultation with the Marrickville Aboriginal Consultative Committee.

Denison Road Playground Community Garden

Site remediation works in preparation for use of the park as a community garden is scheduled for early 2013.

Petersham Park Stage One Construction – Playground

Detailed design and preparation of tender documents is underway. A tender process is scheduled for early 2013 with construction planned for mid 2013 to coordinate with the Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre upgrade construction program.

Camperdown Memorial Rest Park Lighting and Pathworks

Path replacement works were completed in July. Quotations have been received for the design of path lighting throughout the park. Construction of the lighting is planned for 2013/14 financial year subject to budget.

Kintore Street Road Closure

Construction of upgrade works was completed in August and included a community planting day on 18 August. Installation of a public art element is scheduled for early 2013.

Sydenham Green Playground

Consultation for playground equipment and rubber surfacing replacement at Sydenham Green playground was undertaken in August and a quotation process has been completed and installation is scheduled for early 2013. A review of the Sydenham Green Plan of Management will be undertaken by Council in the coming months.

Camdenville Park Site Investigations

Additional site investigations and monitoring in RailCorp land were completed in June. A landfill gas risk assessment workshop was undertaken with Council staff in August. Completion of reports and a draft Remediation Action Plan is anticipated in December with final completion subject to review by Office of Environment and Heritage and the site auditor. Remediation requirements will be incorporated into future upgrading plans for the park.

Jack Shanahan Park Court Repair

Removal of the damaged basketball court area was completed in August.

Jack Shanahan Park Improvements

Community consultation for park upgrading was undertaken in October and November, including a community consultation session held in the park, in conjunction with Transport for NSW consultation for the Dulwich Hill light rail stop. Concept designs for the park will be provided to Council in early 2013 for endorsement. Construction is planned for 2013 following a detailed design and tender process.

Graffiti Hotspot Program

Council received funding under the Attorney General's Office Graffiti Hotspot Program for exercise equipment and toilet upgrades at Camperdown Park to address antisocial behaviour issues. Toilet improvements were completed in June and the exercise equipment installation completed in November.

Waterplay Park Shade Structure

The installation of a shade structure at the Steel Park waterplay park was completed in October.

O'Dea Reserve Dog Off Leash Facilities

Community consultation for the upgrading of the O'Dea Reserve Dog Off Leash Area was undertaken in November and included a consultation session in the park. The project aims to reconstruct the dog exercise area surface and improve facilities. Construction is planned for autumn 2013 following a design and quotation process.

Street Tree Planting (capital works)

Street tree planting at Marrickville Road, Dulwich Hill was completed in August. A review of Cavendish Street tree planting is to be undertaken to confirm estimates and a works program.

Park Tree Planting (capital works)

Park tree planting at Johnson Park, Ryan Park, Tom Kenny Reserve, Kendrick Park and Tempe Reserve were completed in August. A review of sites for park tree planting for 2012-2013 is underway and planting is planned for April 2013 or in coordination with park upgrading project programs.

Louisa Lawson Picnic Shelter

Community consultation for the installation of a picnic shelter/s at Louisa Lawson Reserve has commenced. Construction is scheduled for the third quarter following a quotation process.

Amy Street Playground Upgrade

Community consultation for the upgrading of Amy Street Playground was undertaken in November. Construction is planned for the fourth quarter following and design and quote process.

Marrickville Golf Course Tree Planting and Revegetation

Planning for tree planting and revegetation of a Cooks River foreshore area at Marrickville Golf Course has commenced in conjunction with Environmental Services. The site is intended to be prepared for volunteer planting on National Tree Day in mid 2013.
