Although the vast majority of sites in the Sydney coastal
region are found along the Parramatta River and Georges River,
Kendrick
Park Midden showed that Aboriginal people along the banks
of the Cooks River ate very similar types of shellfish.
Shell middens along Cooks River contain a variety of
species, especially the Sydney
Cockle (Anadara trapezium) and Sydney
Rock Oyster (Soccostrea Glomerata) and to a lesser extent Hairy
Mussel (Trichomya Hirsuta).
Stone
artifacts have been recorded at several coastal sites,
some in relative abundance. Early research found that sources
of stone suitable for flaking are rare or absent in the
coastal region, however, recent research contrasts with this
view. A source of silcrete was located at Newtown in 1980.
