The burial vaults were constructed by Thomas Holt in the late 1800s. The overhang is adjacent to the floodplain of the river. The sandstone was partially quarried in the 1930s by Council as part of a public works program. The surviving sandstone cliff extends for approximately 100m, with overhangs occurring in intermittent places. Some of the overhangs have sandstone brick columns to stabilise them (Plate 5-3). These stabilising columns were constructed in the 1970s as part of the development of an oil pipeline through that area. Topsoil above the sandstone cliff contains modern brick, pottery and pieces of sandstone.

The sandstone overhang into which the Burial vaults have been constructed is important to the local Aboriginal community. It is the belief of some that the remains of Aboriginal use/occupation of the overhang may still exist in deposits on the floor of the overhang, which is now hidden by the vaults.
