Sites may remain in buried deposits along the banks of the
Cooks River and Sheas Creek/Alexandra Canal where extensive
construction works have taken place since the early 1800s.
Analysis of shell deposit at the QANTEK site, located
between Tempe House, the Cooks River and the Princess Highway
revealed the species Anadara trapezia, Phyrazus ebenieus,
Austrocochlea constricta, Ostrea sp and Polinices sp.
Although it could not be determined whether the shells were
naturally deposited or the remains of Aboriginal meals, the
relatively high proportion of juveniles and the high number of
articulated bivalves among the shells suggest it is more
likely to be naturally deposited shell.
The QANTEK site shows that there is undisturbed sediments
below post 1788 fill. It is possible that archaeological
material remains in some of these undisturbed deposits along
the Cooks River. |
