A survey was carried out for the proposed M5 East Motorway in 1994. A shell horizon was located on the south bank of Wolli Creek and on the northern bank. It was uncertain whether these were Aboriginal middens, further testing was required to validate these rock shelters as sites.

Students from Tranby College, Glebe recorded several rock shelters along Wolli Creek. The survey area covered the banks of Wolli Creek from the Cooks River Bridge past Turella and Bardwell Park stations to Bexley North. Ten rock shelters were recorded within 3.8km of the junction of Wolli Creek and the Cooks River. Recent re-surveying of this area has found that some of these rock shelters do not contain evidence of archaelogical deposit. Three of these rock shelters are proven Aboriginal sites as they have visible archealogical deposit which contained shell, bone, charcoal and flaked stone.
