The natural vegetation of the Cadigal & Wangal people
has been forever changed by hundreds of years of development.
This section explores the vegetation patterns as they existed
in 1788 and describes how the Cadigal and Wangal people may
have used the natural resources to live as they always had
since the Dreamtime. |
Cadigal history, like the history of many Aboriginal clans,
is based on oral traditions handed down by many generations
over millennia. However, through the invasion, the Cadigal and
Wangal nations were dispersed, dispossessed and alienated from
their traditional lands. |
Aboriginal land was created in the Dreamtime and the Cadigal
and Wangal clans saw themselves as the custodians the
Marrickville LGA. Their spiritual beliefs honored this unique
association, paying homage to the ancestors, the mythical
beings who created the landscape which was the lifeblood
sustaining the clans. |
Prior to the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, the
Cadigal and Wangal people successfully lived along the Cooks
River for thousands of years. Over this time, an enormous body
of knowledge and special skills were developed to harness the
life sustaining resources that the Cook's River and the
surrounding lands provided. |
