Artists in Residency - 2009 Program
April/May: Sarah-Jane Cook (painter)
Sarah-Jane Cook comes from a family of artists and creative types, and learnt music, dance and visual art from a young age. At 15, she decided that the visual arts was her favourite domain and has since dedicated herself to the learning, production and creation of visual art works in a variety of media. Sarah-Jane also works with school and community groups, as she loves sharing her artistic skills with others. As part of her residency, Sarah-Jane will be exhibiting at At the Vanishing Point Gallery, 565 King Street, Newtown.
May/June: Erin Keys (sculptor and jewellery maker)
Erin has been living in eastern Europe for the past 18 months, documenting cultural variances by way of photography. Erin uses photographic rendering and a combination of metals to juxtapose traditional jewellery making techniques with contemporary concepts. Erin is currently a resident artist at Adelaide's Jam Factory, and the artist's previous work included designing for contemporary exhibitions and trade-based commissions.
June/July: Anino Shadowplay Collective
Anino Shadowplay Collective was established in 1992. They are a group of multimedia artists from the Philippines dedicated to popularizing the art of shadow play and puppetry. Towards this end, Anino undertakes live performances, exhibitions, video, publication and workshops in a wide community context.
Anino Shadowplay Collective will be performing at the Don’t Look Gallery in Dulwich Hill as part of their residency.
July/August: Julie Monroe-Allison
Julie's visual artworks are an investigation into the intersections of natural and cultural history in Australia, with a particular focus on land and environment. Her work is informed by Australian bush craft traditions, particularly the importance of landscape and cross-cultural exchange within those traditions. During her stay she will be creating a series of works for her next exhibition.
September/October: Tis Milner-Nichols (sculptor)
Tis combines an exhibition practice of site specific installations and sculpture with part time freelance arts management and teaching. Viewing art as a portal by which to gain insight into another culture and an opportunity to convey ideas, Tis will utilise this residency to interact with new communities, immerse in a new environment, make connections with Sydney Galleries and local artists and expose her work to new audiences. Exploring 'perception' though series of 3D forms and arrangements, Tis will develop a new body of work in the studio plus create installations in the public domain.
