November 2009Friends of Cooks River Valley Garden Working BeeSunday 8 November, 9.00am - 12.00pm Volunteers take part in planting, weeding and mulching the native garden at Tempe Reserve, which was designed to showcase the indigenous plants of the Cooks River Valley Garden for local landscapers and residents. Working in the garden also gives volunteers the opportunity to be part of the garden's ongoing development. Morning tea will be provided.
Recycling TourTuesday 10 November, 1.30pm - 4.00pm To celebrate National Recycling Week, Marrickville residents are invited to a free tour of the VISY Recycling Facility to see what happens to their recycling after it is collected. The VISY education centre is located on an industrial site, so please wear long trousers and fully enclosed sturdy footwear. Refreshments and a free gift will be provided. Transport is included. Limited to age 14 and over.
Remembrance Day ceremonyWednesday 11 November, 11am Council will hold a Remembrance Day ceremony at the memorial niche in Petersham Town Hall. This will be led by the Mayor of Marrickville, Councillor Sam Iskandar. Original postcards from World War One from the collection of Victor Levitt will be on display.
Free Healthy Ageing TalksThursday 12 November, 10am - 12pm Podiatrist Chloe Abbot will speak about podiatry at 10am and Educator from Osteoporosis NSW Janine Dawson will discuss osteoporosis and exercise at 11am. Morning tea will be provided at the event, which is co-sponsored by Marrickville Council and Council on the Ageing (COTA) NSW.

'Back to Marrickville Road' historical photographic exhibitionSaturday 14 November, 11am - 3pm The annual Back to Marrickville Road historical photographic exhibition will take place at Alex Trevallion Plaza. The official opening is at 11am by the Mayor of Marrickville, Councillor Sam Iskandar.
Marrickville Youth Council MeetingWednesday 18 November, 5pm - 7pm The Marrickville Youth Council meets to identify and address issues affecting young people in the Marrickville local government area.
Friends of Camperdown Cemetery Working BeeSaturday 21 November, 9:00am - 11:00am (note the earlier start time during the daylight savings period) Hidden in Camperdown Cemetery in Newtown is a patch of Kangaroo Grass (Themeda australis) considered a remnant of the now rare Turpentine-Ironbark Forests that once covered most of the Inner West. The Friends of Camperdown Cemetery meet monthly for working bees to regenerate the remnant grassland, under the guidance of a Biodiversity Supervisor who has qualifications in bush regeneration. Morning tea will be provided.
Marrickville Landcare GroupSunday 22 November, 9:00am - 12:00pm Using local native plants grown at the Marrickville Community Nursery, the Marrickville Landcare Group has been undertaking projects along the Cooks River including Steel Park, Marrickville Golf Course and the Warren. The group meets for monthly working bees, where volunteers undertake various tasks, including weeding, planting and mulching under the direction of a qualified Biodiversity Supervisor.
2009 Environment Awards for Business and OrganisationsWednesday 25 November, 6pm - 8pm The presentation evening by the Cooks River will announce the winners of the 2009 Environment Awards for Businesses in Marrickville. The event will also acknowledge and congratulate the efforts of local businesses and organisations that have worked to achieve their sustainability targets over the last twelve months within the 'target sustainability @ marrickville' program and the Sustainable Advantage program. The event will be a fantastic opportunity for attendees to meet like-minded business operators from the local area and will provide an occasion for business operators to meet the Mayor, Councillors and staff of Marrickville Council as well as other special guests. Nominations for the 2009 awards will be called for in early October; check with Council's website in early October for details.

'Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers' WorkshopMonday 7 December, 6.30 - 8.30pm The free two hour workshop offers parents and supervisors practical advice on how to provide effective driving practice. The workshop will cover topics such as how to use the learner driver log book, how to plan driving lessons, how to deal with difficulties that may arise during driving practice and the importance of giving the learner constructive feedback.
