Afternoon Tea for Chinese New Year of the TigerThursday 11 February, 1.30pm - 3.30pm Celebrate Chinese New Year with a free afternoon tea. Enjoy Chinese food, a cultural display, painting and calligraphy demonstration and a tai chi performance.
Friends of Cooks River Valley Garden Working BeeSunday 14 February, 9.00am - 12.00pm Volunteers take part in planting, weeding and mulching the native garden at Tempe Reserve, which was designed to showcase the indigenous plants of the Cooks River Valley Garden for local landscapers and residents. Working in the garden also gives volunteers the opportunity to be part of the garden's ongoing development. Morning tea will be provided.
Free Household Chemical CleanOut and e-Waste CollectionSaturday 20 February, 9.00am - 3:30pm Marrickville residents are being encouraged to rid their homes of potentially dangerous or unwanted chemicals and e-Waste. So if you have old paints, gas bottles, fluorescent tubes, batteries, motor oils, household cleaners, computers, TVs, cameras and other electronic waste simply bring them to Marrickville Council’s free household chemical and e-Waste collection to be recycled and diverted from landfill to protect our environment. The Household Chemical Cleanout is a joint initiative of Marrickville Council and the NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water. Water Sensitive Urban Design on Your Property - IntroductionSaturday 20 February, 9.30am - 12.00pm What is a Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) and how can you do it? This is the first in a series of workshops which will help you build your own WSUD feature, such as a wetland. Bookings are essential as places are limited.
Friends of Camperdown Cemetery Working BeeSaturday 20 February, 9.00am - 11.00am Hidden in Camperdown Cemetery in Newtown is a patch of Kangaroo Grass (Themeda australis) considered a remnant of the now rare Turpentine-Ironbark Forests that once covered most of the Inner West. The Friends of Camperdown Cemetery meet monthly for working bees to regenerate the remnant grassland, under the guidance of a Biodiversity Supervisor who has qualifications in bush regeneration. Morning tea will be provided.

Healthy Ageing TalksThursday 25 February,10.00am - 12.00pm Guests speaker, Moya Turner, from the Council on the Ageing (COTA NSW) will discuss 'Quality Use of Medicines' and Georgina Harper from Cancer Council NSW will present the topic 'Skin Cancer: Sunsmart.' The free talks are co-sponsored by Council on the Ageing (COTA NSW) and Marrickville Council.
Marrickville Landcare GroupSunday 28 February, 9.00am - 12.00pm The Marrickville Landcare Group has been undertaking projects along the Cooks River including Steel Park, Marrickville Golf Course and the Warren. The group meets for monthly working bees where volunteers undertake various tasks including weeding, planting and mulching under the direction of a qualified Biodiversity Supervisor. Morning tea will be provided.
March 2010Clean Up Australia DayTuesday 2 March 2010: Business Clean Up Friday 5 March 2010: Schools Clean Up Sunday 7 March 2010: Clean Up Australia Day Clean Up Australia Day is the nation's largest community-based environmental event. This year Clean Up Australia Day celebrates its 20th anniversary with the theme 'Just One'. This theme highlights the fact that if each and every Australian picks up 'just one' piece of rubbish, approximately 20 million pieces of litter would be removed from our environment. Businesses, schools and community groups may register a clean up site at cleanup.org.au. Becoming a Site Supervisor is easy - just choose a location for your Clean Up, get a group of friends or colleagues together to help and register your site by Monday 15 February 2010. You will be issued a Clean Up Kit from Clean Up Australia after you have registered. It is important to register as soon as possible to avoid any delays with kit distribution. Individual volunteers may join a registered clean up site in their local area by visiting cleanup.org.au Marrickville Council will be providing support, additional materials and rubbish removal if required. Marrickville Council will also be hosting a picnic in Steele Park on the community Clean Up Australia Day, Sunday 7 March 2010.

Helping Learner Drivers become Safer DriversTuesday 23 March, 6.30 - 8.30pm Marrickville and Leichhardt Councils, with the support of the Roads and Traffic Authority are holding a workshop for parents and supervisors of learner drivers to help them better understand the graduated licensing system (GLS) and support them in making learner drivers safer drivers. April 2010Marrickville MedalWednesday 14 April, 6.00pm - 9.00pm The highly regarded Marrickville Medal for built conservation will be awarded to the best example of new work to an old building in the Marrickville Local Government area. The presentation evening will include an exhibition of shortlisted entries, judge’s comments, presentation of the Marrickville Medal, Highly Commended entries, and The Heritage Promotions Special Achievement Award for the promotion of history in the Marrickville Council area. There will be an exhibition of historic material from the Council Archives, a lively talk from a notable guest speaker and refreshments will be served. All welcome. This event is organised by The Marrickville Heritage Promotions Committee.
