Activities for Seniors
Council is committed to supporting a range of activities and programs to improve the quality of life for older people living in Marrickville.
In 2008, Council developed the Marrickville Ageing Strategy, a strategic plan to be implemented over the next three years. One of the key recommendations from the plan was to initiate a Seniors Activities program and encourage greater use of the existing range of local community facilities.
Recently, a Seniors Activities Officer was employed by Council to develop a range of physical activity, social and creative opportunities to build on the health and wellbeing of older residents.
In coming months there will be a whole range of activities catering for the varying leisure needs of seniors living in Marrickville. All activities will have a social focus, and will present an opportunity for residents over 55 years to have fun and challenge themselves in a positive and welcoming environment.

Art Group
Marrickville Council invites you to enjoy a series of six creative workshops. In a friendly environment, explore different painting techniques that promote self expression, creativity and relaxation. No experience is necessary; just bring yourself as all materials are supplied.

Learn Tai Chi
Learn tai chi at with instructor Mr. Van Liem Huynh, with over 40 years instructional experience. Assisted by the Sydney South West Area Health Service's Multicultural Health Service. Click here to download a flyer (PDF format).

The Seniors' Exercise Program
Stay active with gentle exercise classes focussing on balance, flexibility and strength.
- When: 11am - 1pm on every second and fourth Wednesday of the month
- Where: Tom Foster Community Care, 11-13 Darley St, Newtown
- Who is it for? Over 55s of all fitness levels
- Cost: $6.50 per session and includes lunch
- Note: Transport is also provided for those that require it
Tom Foster Yoga Group
Come and enjoy yoga for seniors.
- When: 11am - 1pm on the first Wednesday of every month.
- Where: Tom Foster Community Care, 11-13 Darley St, Newtown
- Who is it for? Over 55s of all fitness levels
- Cost: $6.50 per session and includes lunch

Songs From Next Door Choir
Join a community choir, learn songs and develop or rediscover singing skills. The choir is led by a qualified choir director. Participants are invited to share songs from their cultural or musical background as well as learning vocal warm ups and techniques for singing in a group.
When: 12.30 - 3pm every Tuesday

Social Activity Group
Come along and enjoy informal fortnightly recreation afternoons at the Seaview St Hall, Dulwich Hill. Have a cup of tea and a game of cards, some craft, or perhaps listen to a guest speaker. Activities will vary but the idea is simple - it is a chance to get together with friends, meet new people and have a good chat. Commencement date is to be confirmed. Health and Wellbeing Talks
Council's Healthy Ageing talks program has finished for 2009. More talks will be organised in 2010 and details will be posted once confirmed. For further information phone the Strategic Community project Officer - Ageing on 9335 2155.
Free Talks on Legal Issues for Seniors
Presented by TARS and Marrickville Council, this talk will cover six serious senior issues: the Power of Attorney, appointment of Enduring Guardian, advanced care directives, donation of organs, funeral issues and wills. Click here to download a flyer (PDF format).
