| Celebrating our young people for 50 years |
This year Council is preparing a special program for the Marrickville Festival of Youth – celebrating our young people for 50 years. The year-long program of events will celebrate 50 years continuous support for Youth Week, which this year takes place 5-13 April.
Council and community groups, including the Marrickville Youth Resource Centre at the Jarvie Park Youth Facility and Marrickville Youth Council, will collaborate to involve young people in a wide range of activities and workshops during Youth Week and throughout the year. Local schools, religious groups, ethnic and Aboriginal organisations, as well as young residents from the area, will be given opportunities to participate. The celebrations and activities will highlight the positive contributions young people make in the local area.
Council has supported youth programs since 1958 and, with the assistance of the NSW Government, coordinated its own successful Youth Week programs since 1991. An exhibition that traces young people who were involved in the first Festival of Youth and Culture in 1958 to the present has been supported by Marrickville Council’s History Program and is resourced from the Archival Reference Centre.
Marrickville Festival of Youth will give young people a chance to highlight issues of significance to them, to help promote young people’s contributions to the community, and to increase community awareness of their aspirations.
The official launch for Marrickville Festival of Youth will take place on Friday 4 April at the Petersham Town Hall.
