Marrickville CouncilA diverse, vibrant and innovative community
The Marrickville area is a great place to live and visit and represents the best of multicultural inner-city living. The Marrickville Local Government area is a diverse, vibrant and innovative area that acknowledges and is proud of its original people - the Cadigal-Wangal - and of each new generation of immigrants that have settled here. The area covers 16 square kilometres and is bounded by Parramatta Road to the north, King Street (Newtown) and the Princes Highway to the east, the Alexandra Canal and Cooks River to the south, and Old and New Canterbury Roads to the west. The area is less than 10 kilometres from the city centre, and comprises some of Sydney's oldest suburbs - Camperdown, Dulwich Hill, Enmore, Lewisham, Marrickville, Newtown, Petersham, St Peters, Stanmore, Sydenham and Tempe. We are one of the most diverse, vibrant and innovative communities in Australia. People of different ages, lifestyles and diverse cultural backgrounds have made our community what it is today. The 2006 Census reported that Marrickville's population has declined slightly to 75,000. Our community is culturally and linguistically diverse, with 38.3% of the population born overseas, and 35.9% speaking a language other than English at home. The main non-English languages spoken are Greek, Vietnamese, Chinese (Cantonese), Arabic and Portuguese. Council plays an important role in our community, contributing to the look and feel of the area. The Marrickville Plan 2025, Strategic Plan 2006-2011 and Annual Management Plan set out our strategic direction and operational service delivery. The delivery of these programs and activities is guided by the Marrickville Model, Council's internal operating framework. Marrickville Council's mission is to be a responsive, innovative and efficient Council that exercises leadership and builds community strength. Marrickville Council has developed a long term vision for the area to the year 2025. Marrickville Council will work with the people of Marrickville to ensure that we maintain and build upon those elements of the community that we value, in order to keep Marrickville a great place to live in 2025 and beyond. Formed in 1949, Marrickville Council provides a large and diverse range of services, provided by over 500 staff. Council's annual expenditure is approximately $80 million. Our Administrative Centre is located at 2-14 Fisher Street, Petersham.
