Inner West Council is a new council formed by the merger of the former Ashfield, Leichhardt and Marrickville Councils. It was proclaimed by the NSW Minister for Local Government on 12 May 2016. The former elected councils were dissolved on this date.
Richard Pearson was appointed by the Minister as the Administrator of the new council during the initial period. The Administrator has the functions of the full council and mayor.
The first election of the councillors of the new council will be held on 9 September 2017. The mayor of a new council will be elected by councillors in accordance with the Local Government Act 1993.
Council conducts its business and decision-making in formal Council and Standing Committee Meetings. These meetings are open to the public, except in circumstances where Council can exclude the public and the press provided legislative requirements are met. The Local Government Act prescribes the number of council meetings that must be held each year, what constitutes a quorum, and when notices of meetings must be given.
Council meetings are run in accordance with a Code of Meeting Practice that complies with the various legal requirements of the Act and the Regulations and stipulates the rules for the conduct of meetings.
