Council conducts its business and decision-making in formal Council and Standing Committee Meetings. These meetings are open to the public, except in circumstances where Council can exclude the public and the press provided legislative requirements are met. The Local Government Act prescribes the number of council meetings that must be held each year, what constitutes a quorum, and when notices of meetings must be given.

Council meetings are run in accordance with a Code of Meeting Practice that complies with the various legal requirements of the Act and the Regulations and stipulates the rules for the conduct of meetings.

The framework for meetings is set by a combination of:

  • The Local Government Act 1993
  • The Local Government (General) Regulation 2005
  • Council's Code of Meeting Practice
  • Common law

Council's Governance staff are responsible for the administrative functions necessary to ensure all Council and Committee meetings are held in accordance with the various legislative requirements.
