North Ward

Image of Councillor Barry Cotter

Barry was born in Newtown and went to North Newtown Primary, Erskineville Primary and Enmore Boys High School.

In the 1960s the Cotter family moved to Revesby but Barry, missing the inner city life he'd become accustomed to and loved, moved back to Newtown.

In the 1980s Barry graduated with a Law degree from the University of NSW. Prior to that in the 1970s he attained a Diploma in Industrial Relations Sydney Technical College (now University of Technology).

For 7 years Barry worked as a Public Servant, and for 10 years after that he was a Trade Union Official. Taking on a senior role he returned to the Public Service, however from 1991 to 2004, Barry took on Mayoralty as a full time role dedicating his time to the community and to those that ask to see him.

More recently he has been a board member of the Commonwealth Funds Management Board and the Addison Road Community Centre.

His involvement in the Labor Party began in 1967 where he has held a number of positions.

Looking at State and National politics he decided to look into becoming involved at a local level recognising the importance of local decision making and activities.

When one researches the recent and not so recent activities related to the airport one of the most vocal spokespeople you will come across will be Barry Cotter.

Barry is proud to be Councillor in an area that has such a strong commitment to Multiculturalism.
