Dimitrios has lived in Dulwich Hill since early childhood where both his parents established businesses in the early 1970’s.
He went to school locally finishing up with a bachelor’s degree in Dental Surgery from Sydney University in 1995.
Dimitrios spent the first two years after graduating from University as a dentist in rural NSW and it was during this time that he began working with indigenous communities. He still regularly takes time away from work to provide professional services to remote communities around Australia on a volunteer basis.
He returned to Dulwich Hill in 1997 where he set up his own dental practice called the Smile Shop where he has worked and lived ever since.
In 1998 Dimitrios was elected President of the Dulwich Hill Chamber of Commerce and was instrumental in setting up the Dulwich Hill Mainstreet program in 1999. He was first elected as an Independent Councillor for Marrickville in 1999, was re-elected in 2004, has served a stint as Deputy Mayor and was elected Mayor in September 2007.
Dimitrios’ involvement is a result of his belief that everyone should have a fair go at being involved in the decisions that govern us – especially at the local government level – and that it is important for people to have representation outside of traditional political organisations, thus he is elected as an Independent.
Dimitrios supports providing high quality services and facilities to the residents of Marrickville.
He supports the revitalisation of Enmore pool by building a new 50 metre indoor pool facility at Enmore Park that will include a childminding facility, program pool for the elderly, children’s play pool, gymnasium and modern changing rooms.
He also supports upgrading Council’s Petersham pool facility once Enmore Pool is completed.
Other projects he supports include a New Library at the old Marrickville Hospital site (Cnr of Livingstone Rd and Marrickville Rd), the expansion of Council’s Childcare facilities by building a new childcare centre at Marrickville West Public School with a capacity to cater for approximately 60 children and the provision of out of hours care facilities for children at our local primary schools.
Dimitrios also believes that Council has an obligation to provide services to the elderly and is a vocal supporter of Council’s ageing strategy. In particular he would like to see “drop in centres” created to provide opportunities for the aged to get out of their homes, pursue new hobbies, meet new people and participate in a range of new experiences.
Most importantly Dimitrios believes that local Councillors should be more focussed on local issues rather than national or international politics.
Dimitrios’ other interests include music (having played the clarinet for 15 years), alternative and foreign films, solving puzzles, cooking, reading and the occasional visit to the local watering hole with friends. |
