Councillor Sam Byrne
West Ward

Image of Councillor Sam Byrne

Sam was elected to Council in 1999 representing West Ward. He lives in Marrickville and is a member of The Greens. Social justice and environmental issues inspired Sam to get active in his local community.

Sam supports only appropriate development, protecting solar access, privacy and the streetscape. Community participation in Council's activities and decision making is very important to him.

Sam wants to preserve our parks and public land and develop a visionary plan for how we want Marrickville to look and function 20 years from now. Local shops, organisations, social capital and transport systems are key factors in this plan.

Sam enjoys meeting people and treasures Marrickville's unique diversity. He'd like to see more young people involved in Council.

Sam went to school locally and has completed a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in International Politics. Now working in the Federal Public Service, he has also worked with disabled adults, as a railway signaller and for a newspaper in the Middle East.

Sam helped to establish the Dulwich Hill/Marrickville Amnesty International Group, is an active member of Alfalfa House Food Cooperative on Enmore Road and plays soccer with the mighty Hurlstone Park Wanderers.
