    Information for Voters

    (Please note that voting in the local government election is compulsory for all enrolled voters in NSW)

     

    In the 2008 Local Government Election, you will be voting for 12 councillors. There are four wards in the Marrickville local government area and three councillors are elected from each ward.

     

    Enrolments

    The roll of electors is comprised of the following:

    • Residential roll;
    • Roll of non-resident owners; and
    • Roll of occupiers and ratepaying lessees.

     

    Non-residential Rolls

    If you are an owner, rate-paying lessee or occupier of rateable land which is not your primary residence, you or a nominee may be entitled to be enrolled on the roll of non-residential owners of rateable land or the roll of occupiers and rate-paying lessees for this election.

     

    Details of the eligibility criteria for a claim and enrolment claim forms may be downloaded below, obtained from Marrickville Council’s offices at 2-14 Fisher Street, Petersham NSW 2049 or will be forwarded to you by Council upon request. Inquiries about the non-residential rolls can be directed to the Manager, Administrative Services on (02) 9335 2023.

     

     

    The claim must be completed and lodged with Marrickville Council on or before 6.00pm Monday, 4 August 2008.

     

    If a claim for non-residential enrolment was made for a previous council election and you wish to claim enrolment for this election you must re-apply.

     

    Residential Roll

    All electors enrolled on the Commonwealth/State electoral roll as at Monday, 4 August 2008 residing in the Marrickville Local Government Area will be included on the roll for the election.

     

    To check your enrolment details or to obtain a residential enrolment form visit the NSW Electoral Commission website or call 1300 135 736. Residential enrolment forms are also available from any Australia Post office. Enrolment forms must be received by 6pm Monday, 4 August 2008.

     

    Voting in Local Government elections is compulsory for all electors included on the residential roll.

     

    Voting Centres

    Information about polling places will be included on this website closer to the election day.

     

    Information for Candidates

     

    If you are interested in becoming a councillor you will need to nominate as a candidate. Nominations must be made between 4 August and 13 August 2008.

     

    The Department of Local Government and the Local Government and Shires Associations of NSW have published Becoming a Councillor which gives an overview of local government in NSW, outlines a Councillor’s role, and provides information about nominating as a candidate for local government election. The booklet can be downloaded here in PDF form.

     

    Free Pre-Election Seminars

    Marrickville Council is hosting a Pre-Election Candidate Seminar that will include information about local government, the roles and responsibilities of a Councillor, life as a Councillor and details about the election process.  The Seminar will be held on Thursday, 19 June 2008 (6–9pm). Council particularly welcomes female participants, and Councillor Fiona Byrne will be on hand to answer questions. For any inquiries concerning the seminar or to make a booking, please contact Council’s Administration Officer on 9335 2072.

     

    Candidate Seminars are also being conducted by the NSW Electoral Commission during May and June 2008. Details of these seminars can be found at the NSW Electoral Commission website.
