Council plays an important role in promoting environmental responsibility among businesses, schools, households and community groups.
Our Local Agenda 21 Plan sets out Council's detailed objectives for protecting environmentally sensitive areas in Marrickville and for promoting ecologically sustainable development in the area.
In particular, the Cooks River needs to be protected from pollution and the river environment restored.
Issues such as stormwater management, traffic noise and waste are also of particular concern to inner city councils such as Marrickville.
Agenda 21 identifies what Council is doing to help our local natural environment with initiatives covering such diverse matters as environmental education, energy efficiency, biodiversity conservation and waste minimisation.
Marrickville Council is required to prepare an annual State of Environment Report. The Report is structured around the themes of Land, Air, Water, Energy, Biodiversity, Waste, Liveability (incorporating Noise, Aboriginal Heritage and Non-Aboriginal Heritage) and Learning for Sustainability. It summarises any new or updated information relating to the environmental indicators and activities undertaken during the reporting period to protect and enhance the local environment. It also highlights any emerging issues or threats to the environment.
