land use planning
Marrickville's Local Environmental Plan (LEP 2001) controls the development and use of land across the Marrickville area.
It is the starting point for all enquiries relating to zoning, land use and development.
LEP 2001 ensures that the amenity of the Marrickville area is maintained and protected, while also allowing for development to provide housing, employment and recreational opportunities.
Development Control Plans
LEP 2001 is complemented by a series of development control plans that set the standard for urban housing, business and commercial areas, environmentally sustainable practices (such as energy and water use efficiency) and access and mobility.
Council's town planning documents are user-friendly. The Urban Housing Plan provides guidelines on housing design and the Housing Approvals Guide provides simple and clear instructions for development applicants.

2009 review of plans
Marrickville Council is undertaking a major review of its planning controls. The review aims to ensure that the Marrickville local government area remains a great place in which to live, work and visit. The review of Marrickville’s planning controls responds to the NSW State Government’s Planning Reform Program and will result in the preparation of a new comprehensive local environmental plan (LEP) and consolidated development control plan (DCP) for the Marrickville local government area.
Council is working towards a timeframe of 31 March 2009 for completion of the new LEP and consolidated DCP.
