Cycleways
Implementing the Bicycle Strategy
Council adopted the Marrickville Bicycle Strategy in August 2007 following extensive community consultation.
The Strategy encompasses:
1. A bicycle network plan 2. A bicycle parking plan 3. Better integration with public transport 4. Bicycle-friendly streets & neighbourhoods.
The strategy identifies 12 Regional Routes (RR) covering approximately 50 km and 20 Local Routes (LR) across the local government area covering 45 km. Total implementation cost was estimated in excess of $7 million.
Completed Works
The following major works have been completed since adoption of the strategy:
- RR 07 Newtown to Ashfield – Stage 1: On road pavement, signs and markings completed between Newtown and Petersham (2006/07);
- RR 07 Newtown to Ashfield – Stage 2: Roundabout modifications at Trade/ Liberty St Intersection, Stanmore. (2007/08);
- RR 11 Cooks River - Stage 2: Mackey Park Reconstruction & Widening $165,000 (2007/08);
- RR 11 Cooks River – Stage 3: Warren Pk reconstruction & Widening at Carrington St end $73,000 (2007/08); and
- an annual program of bike rack installations.
Upcoming Works
The 2008/09 funded works include the following:
- RR 05 Camperdown to Marrickville – Stage 1: $300,000 for on-road signs and markings and intersection treatments;
- RR 11 Cooks River - Stage 4: $200,000 for Warren Park reconstruction and widening;
- RR 12 Alexandra Canal. A consultant is currently being engaged to complete route survey and selection and concept design;
- RR 01 Cooks River to Iron Cove, Greenway Corridor.
