Weed Maintenance

Marrickville Council currently maintains 233 km of road network throughout the local government area (LGA). Part of this maintenance includes weed control.

Council has a contractor currently spraying on a monthly cycle, which will continue until the weeds are at an acceptable service level. It takes 22 working days to spray the whole LGA, with effects not visible for 7-10 days depending on the weather.

Council is also currently undertaking weed chipping in areas that have high weed growth, with extra resources focused on ‘hot spot’ areas.

How does Council control weeds?

Currently Marrickville Council uses an environmentally friendly chemical to treat all weeds throughout the LGA. Council has investigated the use of a steam weed treatment in sensitive areas such as shopping centres and childcare centres. Tenders have recently been called for appropriate contractors to submit prices for both chemical and steam treatment of the Marrickville LGA.

If approved by Council it is anticipated that treatment of weeds by chemical and steam will commence in September 2009.
