Dulwich Hill South LATM Scheme

Marrickville Council has established Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) schemes in 20 local precincts since 1990. Dulwich Hill South LATM Scheme was originally completed in 1996 and initially reviewed in 2000/01. The Scheme is once again being reviewed. The study area is shown in figure 1 below.

A pre-planning questionnaire survey form (factsheet 1) was posted to the 2000 property owners in the Dulwich Hill South LATM traffic precinct area. A plan was developed based on the responses of questionnaire survey from the community, the outcome of traffic surveys and accident data analysis.

Proposals were presented to the Council's Technical Services Committee on 8 September 2009. More details can be found in the Business paper for Technical Services Committee Meeting on 8 September 2009 at the bottom of the page. Council resolved that the following proposals be placed on public exhibition for public comment.

1. Install a median/pedestrian refuge island in Myra Road, at its junction with New Canterbury Road to prevent turning vehicles from cutting corners and improve pedestrian safety;

2. Install a median/pedestrian refuge island in Myra Road, at its junction with The Parade to prevent turning vehicles from cutting corners and improve pedestrian safety;

3. Install one set of speed cushions in Terrace Road, near Property No. 63 Terrace Road, Dulwich Hill South, in front of Alison Playground, to slow the speed of vehicular traffic in Terrace Road;

4. Request the RTA to investigate signal phasing options (using right turn arrows) to improve the safety of motorists turning right from New Canterbury Road into Beach Road;

5. Request the RTA to install pedestrian traffic signals on the southern approach to the existing signalised intersection of New Canterbury Road, Beach Road and Constitution Road to enable pedestrians to cross New Canterbury Road with safety;

6. Extend the "No Stopping" restrictions on the western side of Beach Road at New Canterbury Road to the statutory distance of 20m from the traffic signals (on the western side of Beach Road), to better enable other vehicles to bypass the queue of right turning vehicles waiting in Beach Road at its junction with New Canterbury Road;

7. Install a pedestrian refuge island in Herbert Street, at its junction with New Canterbury Road to enable pedestrians to cross Herbert Street with safety;

8. Install three (3) sets of speed cushions in Yule Street, near Property Nos. 2A, 16 and 34, Yule Street, Dulwich Hill South to reduce vehicle speed;

9. Install a median/pedestrian refuge island in Durham Street, at its junction with Beach Road to prevent turning vehicles from cutting corners and improve pedestrian safety;

10. Make Blackwood Lane one-way from Blackwood Avenue to Macarthur Street to improve traffic circulation in the Dulwich Public School area, especially before and after school hours;

11. Install one (1) set of speed cushions in Ness Avenue, near Property No. 14, Ness Avenue, Dulwich Hill South to reduce the speed of vehicles;

12. Install one (1) set of speed cushions in Tennyson Street, near Property No. 13A, Tennyson Street, Dulwich Hill South to reduce the speed of vehicles;

13. Install rumble bar median and paint “Double Barrier Line” marking on the road curve in Tennyson Street to alert motorists of the bend in the street;

14. Install a median/pedestrian refuge island in Ness Avenue, at its junction with Garnet Street to prevent turning vehicles from cutting corners and improve pedestrian safety;

15. Install a median/pedestrian refuge island in Tennyson Street, at its junction with Riverside Crescent to prevent turning vehicles from cutting corners and improve pedestrian safety;

16. Install a median/pedestrian refuge islands in Canonbury Grove, at its intersection with Beach Road (either side) to better delineate the intersection and improve pedestrian safety.

Public exhibition

The Dulwich Hill South LATM scheme review is on public exhibition for a period of 28 days between 16 October 2009 and 13 November 2009. Submissions will be received until 5pm on 13 November 2009.

During the public exhibition period two concept plans shall be on display at the Citizens's Service Centre at Marrickville Council Administration Building, 2-14 Fisher St, Petersham NSW between the hours of 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday (except public holidays).
