Environmental events and workshops

Council holds a range of free events throughout the year that promote and support the development of sustainable living.

Sustainable House Day

Sunday 11 September 2016 is Sustainable House Day. Council will host both a walking tour and a cycling tour of sustainable homes in the area.

Walking tour of sustainable homes in Petersham and Marrickville
Sunday 11 September, 1.30pm to 4pm

Visit local sustainable homes, meet the owners and discover ways to make your own property more efficient and sustainable:

  • Innovative building techniques
  • Verge planting
  • Rain gardens, permeable paving
  • Drought tolerant gardens
  • Rainwater tanks
  • Urban poultry systems
  • Permaculture gardens
  • Passive heating/cooling
  • Solar PV, solar hot water
  • and much, much more...

The total distance that we expect to walk on the day is less than 2km. If you have access requirements please let us know when you book in and we'll contact you to discuss.

Green Living Centre – Urban Sustainability Workshops

Council and the Green Living Centre regularly host free workshops on a variety of sustainable living topics. The workshops are also an opportunity to meet like-minded members of your local community and exchange ideas.

WATERevolution workshops

Safe Greywater Reuse Workshop

Learn everything you need to know about recycling your greywater at home. From different treatment systems to Council requirements, find out how to install and use greywater safely on your property.

Rainwater Harvesting Workshops

Rainwater Harvesting Workshops will provide you with all the information you need to install a tank – what size and shape, what plumbing is required, tank maintenance and rebates.

Water Sensitive Urban Design Workshops – clean up our waterways and save water too

Council runs the Water Sensitive Urban Design workshop series twice a year. This 3-part workshop series introduces you to the principles of Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) with a practical hands-on workshop that designs and builds a water sensitive feature on a participant's property.

Part 1: Introduction – Saturday 17 September 2016, 9.30am – 1.00pm
How to manage stormwater on your property using green roofs, green walls, rain gardens, wetlands, porous paving, swales and rainwater tanks.

Part 2: Design – Saturday 8 October 2016, 9.30pm – 1.00pm
During this workshop you will learn how to create a detailed water sensitive urban design incorporating lessons learned in part 1.

Part 3: Build – Saturday 5 November 2016, 9.30pm – 1.00pm
In the third workshop, get your hands dirty and build a water sensitive feature on the property of a participant.

Groundwork Workshops

Keeping Native Bees

Come along and learn about the fascinating subject of keeping native Australian bees. Everything you need to know about bees, bee hives and honey production in an urban area.

Keeping Backyard Chickens

Everything you need to know about chickens: food, housing, egg production, maintenance, health, Council requirements and more.

Regular Environmental Events

  • Volunteer Working Bees
    Biodiversity volunteers meet regularly for working bees with the aim of protecting and enhancing local native vegetation communities. There is always time for a cup of tea and a chat too.
     
  • Sustainable Business Breakfasts
    Target sustainability @ Marrickville hosts regular breakfast meetings for business owners or managers interested in sustainable business initiatives in Marrickville.

Annual environmental events

  • Clean Up Australia Day
    Supported by Marrickville Council, Clean Up Australia Day is the nation's largest community-based environmental event.
     
  • National Tree Day
    National Tree Day provides a wonderful opportunity for all Australians to take a positive and active role in helping protect and improve our environment. By planting native trees and shrubs we can help to combat climate change, provide food and shelter for our wildlife and beautify our surroundings.
     
  • Speed Date a Sustainability Expert
    Get free, one-on-one advice from Australia’s leading green architects, designers and experts at the 'Speed Date a Sustainability Expert' event. You will have the chance to workshop your planned renovation or build with a qualified expert in a relaxed, obligation-free environment.
