Summary of business

  • The Natural Bedding Company manufactures and sells natural fibre beds and bedding.

Sustainability vision

  • To be an environmentally conscious and friendly business that offers high quality beds. To further minimise waste, use recycled timber to build frames, and minimise resource consumption in the showroom and factory, and to be a community leader in creating a sustainable future.

Carbon dioxide emissions from electricity usage

  • 100% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by October 2009 relative to the previous year.
  • 5 tonnes of carbon dioxide from electricity usage were emitted in 2007.

Energy efficient practices in place include:

  • Purchasing 100% accredited green power.
  • Making sure all appliances and lights are switched off when not in use. 
  • Using energy star machines i.e. Printers Fax Machine.
  • Not using heating/cooling systems as the shop has good air flow is cool in summer and warm in winter.
  • Creating programs that promote efficient practices in the workplace.

Planned efficient practices:

  • Putting showroom lights on timer.
  • Updating our appliances to low emissions products.

Water imported from outside the catchment

  • The Natural Bedding Company will not focus on water as they are a low water user and no water is used in the production of beds.

Waste to landfill

  • 50% (approximately) of waste is diverted from landfill by:
    • Donating timber, latex, rubberised coir, cotton, and wool to Reverse Garbage.
    • Recycling paper, cardboard, glass, cans, and plastic.
  • 18 m3 per year went to landfill in 2007
  • 50% (of remaining 50%) reduction target for waste to landfill by October 2010.
  • Future initiatives to reduce waste will include examining options to recycle plastic sheeting and better segregation of waste.
  • All fabrics and scraps that can't be used are donated to Reverse Garbage.
