Summary of business

St Peters Salvos Store is a retail and distribution arm of The Salvation Army Salvos Stores that accept donations. The donations are then sorted and supplied to welfare or sold through Salvos Stores with proceeds going to those in need.

Sustainability Vision

St Peters Salvos Store will recycle and re-use donated consumer materials as its core business activity and develop sustainable business systems and processes that can be rolled out to other Salvos Stores, thereby making it the model store for sustainability within The Salvation Army Eastern Territory.

Carbon dioxide emissions from electricity usage

St Peters Salvos Store has committed to a 10% reduction on carbon dioxide emissions from electricity for the 2008/09 financial year. Carbon dioxide emissions from energy usage has been estimated based on extrapolation of a monthly bill to be 112 tonnes of carbon dioxide for the 2007/2008 financial year. The baseline value for the total carbon dioxide emissions will be updated when copies of the previous electricity bills are received from St Peters Salvos Store’s energy supplier.

St Peters Salvos Store energy reduction initiatives, which will be reflected in the electricity bills for the 2007/08 financial year, include:

  • Considering the energy star ratings when purchasing new appliances and equipment;
  • Introducing educational initiatives for staff;
  • Installation of a split air-conditioning system that only cools or heats rooms that are in use.

Water Imported from Outside the Catchment

St Peters Salvos Store has decided not to focus on water for the next financial year, however all toilets have had dual flush installed and are regularly checked to ensure there are no leaks.

Waste to Landfill

St Peters Salvos Store had an 11% reduction in waste stream from 2006/07 to 2007/08, and reached their 2008 targets, with the introduction of a number of recycling initiatives. Waste streams that St Peters Salvos Store now recycle include:

  • Scrap metal;
  • Cardboard;
  • Computer monitors and towers;
  • Clothing / rags;
  • Shoes;
  • Cables;
  • Aluminium;
  • Books;
  • Milk crates recovery;

St Peters Salvos Store has committed to reduce waste to landfill by a further 20% for this current 2008/09 financial year. A number of initiatives are to be introduced to meet this reduction target including:

  • Introducing educational initiatives for staff to improve recycling rates;
  • Identifying and implementing other options for waste streams currently going to landfill.
  • A mattress recycling initiative has recently been implemented;
