Sustainability Vision

Senior Management is currently developing the sustainability vision of @ Newtown RSL as part of the Department of Environment and Climate Change’s Sustainability Advantage program.

Carbon dioxide emissions from electricity usage

@Newtown RSL Club has committed to 20% reduction on carbon dioxide emissions from electricity for the 2009 calendar year relative to the 2007/08 financial year.

The total carbon dioxide emissions for the 2006/07 financial year equates to approximately 1,034 tonnes based on the electricity usage for this period. @Newtown RSL has established baseline values for electricity as part of the Sustainability Advantage program.

Energy efficiency initiatives currently being implemented to reach the reduction target include:

  • Designing and implementing a new air conditioning system,
  • Conducting a review of facilities management and developing environmental key performance indicators (KPIs), which will be built into the facilities management contract,
  • Senior management will participate in Resources Efficiency module as part of the Sustainability Advantage program.

Water Imported from Outside the Catchment

@Newtown RSL Club has committed to 20% reduction on water usage for the 2009 calendar year relative to the 2007/08 financial year. The total water usage for the 2006/07 financial year was 7,673 kL

@Newtown RSL Club has already taken initiatives to reduce water usage by reviewing and modifying the toilet flushing systems and the kitchen and bathroom taps.

This reduction target will be met by:

  • Implementing a new air conditioning systems,
  • Continually upgrading to efficient alternatives for water using appliances,
  • Participating in the Resource Efficiency module of the Sustainability Advantage program.

Waste to Landfill

@Newtown RSL Club has committed to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill by 10% for the 2008 calendar year relative to the 2006/07 financial year. The volume of waste for the 2006/07 financial year was 1,130 m3.

Resource (waste) streams currently recycle include:

  • Cardboard
  • Glass
  • Cans
  • Oil
  • Toner Cartridges

Waste that is currently going to landfill, which @Newtown RSL Club intends reduce, includes: food scraps, paper hand towels, bottle lids, straws, and one off packaging.

@Newtown RSL will explore waste minimisation opportunities through the Supply Chain and Resource Efficiency modules as part of the Sustainability Advantage program.

Other Sustainability Initiatives

Senior management are participating in Marrickville Council’s Sustainability Advantage cluster group. Sustainability Advantage is a program that has been developed by the Department of Environment and Climate Change.
