Carbon dioxide emissions from electricity usage

Master Instruments Pty Ltd has committed to 10% reduction on carbon dioxide emissions from electricity for the 2008 calendar year relative to the year ending 30 September 2007.

The total carbon dioxide emissions for the year ending 30 September 2007 for Master Instruments Pty Ltd equates to approximately 179 tonnes based on the electricity usage for this period.

Master Instruments Pty Ltd plans to meet this target by:

  • negotiating to use 10% Accredited Green Power from their electricity supplier;
  • providing staff training to turn lights and computers off at night;
  • installing energy efficiency lighting;
  • considering the energy star ratings when purchasing new appliances.

Master Instruments Pty Ltd has committed to 10% reduction on water usage for the 2008 calendar year relative to the year ending August 2007.

The total water usage for the year ending August 2007 for Master Instruments Pty Ltd is 742kL.

Master Instruments Pty Ltd plans to meet this target by installing a dual flush toilet system for all 9 staff toilets for more efficient water usage in the 2008 calendar year. Master Instruments Pty Ltd will also introduce an education process for staff to reduce water consumption in the 2008 calendar year to encourage an in-house culture of water conservation and awareness. The manufacturing operations of Master Instruments Pty Ltd do not use any water.

Waste to Landfill

Master Instruments Pty Ltd has committed to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill by 20% for the 2007/08 calendar year relative to the 2006/07 calendar year. The volume of waste for the 2006/07 financial year was 114 m3.

Master Instruments Pty Ltd has reduced its waste going to landfill by using the recycling services provided by contractors for:

  • Cardboard
  • Aluminium Cans
  • Oil
  • Spent batteries

Based on the waste streams that are recycled, Master Instruments Pty Ltd has reached target 4.

Master Instruments Pty Ltd plans to meet this 20% waste reduction target by:

Providing only recyclable bins throughout the manufacturing, assembly, warehouse and office stations;
Introducing employee education initiatives to better manage food and organic waste going to landfill;
Establishing a system where cleaning staff closely vet all waste going into our skip bin for better separation and reduction.
Working with suppliers to reduce packaging or to make their packaging recyclable.
Other Sustainability Initiatives

Master Instruments Pty Ltd currently re-uses eighty percent of inner and outer box packaging of supplied products. Master Instruments Pty Ltd will also develop a documented Environmental Management System (EMS) to actively improve our environmental performance and to identify savings in resource use.
