Summary of business

The Petersham Bowling Club (PBC) is a community owned and run club that offers: social and bare foot bowls, 16 mm film club, bocce club, thai chi, elderly exercise classes, shades of green, jazz on green, a venue for functions, and a 'Wok on the Green' bistro.

Sustainability vision

The PBC has embraced sustainability as part of its overall vision and aims to be a model club that seeks to improve its reduction in waste, water, electricity and all things green. In the long term the PBC hopes to be fully solar and sell electricity back to the grid.

Carbon dioxide emissions from electricity usage

Future targets - Carbon Dioxide

20% reduction for carbon dioxide emissions from electricity for the year ended October 2009 relative to the 10% nominated in October 2008.

Baseline - Carbon Dioxide

71 tonnes of carbon dioxide was emitted for the year ending October 2007 by Petersham Bowling Club.

The PBC plans to meet this 20% target by:

  • investigating the use of Accredited Green Power from their electricity supplier;
  • installing energy efficient lighting;
  • using solar panels in the long term;
  • replacing the insulation and seals for the refrigeration systems;

Water Imported from Outside the Catchment

Future targets - Water

10% reduction on water usage for 2009/2010 financial year relative to December 2008.

Baseline - Water

883 kL is the total water usage for the year ending August 2007 for the PBC.

The PBC plans to meet this target by:

  • Installing dual flushes in all toilets;
  • Upgrading all taps with water saving devices;

The PBC has already:

  • Installed a new irrigation system for the main bowling green that is supported by three water tanks of 3,300 litres in total.
  • installed a 9,500 litres water tank for the Club's amenities.
  • installed a waterless urinal in the men's toilets.
  • Water saving technology at the club has been made possible though a Community Water Grant from the Australian Government.

Waste to Landfill

Future targets - Waste

20% reduction in the amount of waste going to landfill for the 2009/10 financial year relative to year ending December 2008.

Baseline - Waste

142 m3 per year is the baseline volume of waste to landfill for year ending September 2006. Prior to September 2006 there was no recycling. This baseline value for the PCB is currently being verified.

Recycling

Resource (waste) streams that the PBC currently recycle include:

  • Paper and Cardboard:
  • Glass
  • Cans
  • Plastic bottles
  • Cooking oil and grease
  • Printer cartridges
  • Corks

The PBC plans to meet their 20% waste reduction target by:

  • eliminating hand paper towels
  • recycling polystyrene boxes
