Marrickville Community Nursery

Vision

In partnership with the community the Marrickville Community Nursery seeks to be a centre for biodiversity of the Lower Cooks River Valley - protecting, conserving and promoting the biodiversity of species and natural habitats of the area.

Aims

From the Marrickville Community Nursery Management Plan 2005-2010:

• Promote an interest in and further understanding of the native flora and fauna of the Lower Cooks River Catchment;
• To propagate and sell locally native plants;
• Provide opportunities to the community to learn new skills and contribute to nursery operation;
• Work in partnerships with other agencies and organisations.

Marrickville Council has been running the Marrickville Community Nursery since 1999.  Since this time, the nursery has continued to grow in size and influence. It has been central in achieving biodiversity and community education/participation goals in the Marrickville Local Action 21 Strategy (Agenda 21).

Biodiversity

The nursery is licensed to collect and store seed from remaining patches of bushland in the local area. Plants grown from this seed are then used in local revegetation projects, used in plant give-aways to the public and schools, and also sold to the public. Generally, these plants are easy to maintain and require less water and care than many introduced species, as well as attracting native wildlife to your garden.

Community Education

The Marrickville Community Nursery has a viewing platform overlooking a frog pond and a comfortable outdoor seating area. This setting is used regularly as an outdoor classroom for community and school workshops. For enquiries about booking the outdoor classroom call the Community Sustainability Coordinator on 9335 2197.

Location and Opening Times

The Marrickville Community Nursery is located at the Addison Road Centre, 142 Addison Road, Marrickville.

Opening hours for plant sales are every:

• Wednesday 10am - 12 noon
• Saturday 10am - 1pm
• Sunday 10am - 1pm

Note: Changes to opening times during December and January:

• OPEN:  Wednesday 23 December
• CLOSED: 26, 27 & 30 December, 2, 3, 6, 9, 10 & 13 January
• RE-OPENS:  Saturday 16 January

Limited free mulch is usually available for residents within the Marrickville Local Government Area (bring your own bags and shovel). Prices for seedlings start at $2.95, with discounts for community or school projects.
