Marrickville Council is encouraging citizens to establish their own community gardens with the introduction of new policy guidelines that provide comprehensive advice and support on how to develop and manage a garden.
Community gardens are areas of shared land where members of the community come together to grow fresh food and other plants, to learn sustainability principles, relax and make new friends.
Gardens can be located on public open space managed by Council, such as public parks, or private lands, including schools (public and private), churches and community centres.
Marrickville Council has supported community gardens at Marrickville West Primary School and Addison Road for the past two years through the Citizens for Sustainability Program. The new policy guidelines will assess applications from the community for assistance in establishing a community garden.
For a full outline of the new guidelines are available from the Downloads box below. An application form is currently being developed and will be available early in 2008.
