Friends of the Cooks River Valley GardenThis newly established native garden at Tempe Reserve was designed to showcase the indigenous plants of the Cooks River Valley for local landscapers and residents. The garden was inspired by the book, Missing Jigsaw Pieces: The Bushplants of the Cooks River Valley (by Doug Benson, Danie Ondinea and Virginia Bear; Published Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney, 1999). All the plants used in the garden have been propagated from local seed stock by the community nurseries in Marrickville, Randwick and Strathfield. The first plant was put in the ground in September 2001 and the garden is still a work in progress. Activities that volunteers undertake are planting, weeding and mulching under the direction of a Biodiversity Supervisor who has qualifications in bush regeneration. Working in this garden will give you the chance to be involved in the garden’s development over time. The Friends of the Cooks River Valley Garden meet on the 2nd Sunday of the month. Morning tea is provided. Current dates and times:
Location: Behind the Jets Sports Club, Tempe Reserve, Holbeach Ave, Tempe. Note: Times may vary slightly with daylight savings. Meeting times and details are also available on the events calendar. For more information or if you would like to register as a volunteer, contact Council's Biodiversity Coordinator on 9335 2254 or e-mail biocoord@marrickville.nsw.gov.au.
