Sustainable Water Planning with Local PeopleSkip to a section:
Sustainable Urban Water ManagementOne of Marrickville Council’s key priorities is sustainable water management for and with the people of Marrickville. This means planning for the Principles of Sustainable Urban Water Management by practicing good governance.
To achieve this, Council has been working with Monash University in a research partnership called Urban Stormwater Integrated Management (USWIM). What does Urban Stormwater Integrated Management mean for Marrickville?
Sustainable Water Planning Guidelines for CouncilsThe USWIM project has tested a new and more successful way of planning for sustainable water management in highly urban areas, and recently produced the Subcatchment Planning for Sustainable Water Management Guidelines for Councils. You can download a copy of these guidelines from the Downloads box below. Who are the Guidelines for?The Guidelines are designed primarily for regional and local government urban water managers, planners and technicians. The level of information provided here is directed at people with a working knowledge of urban water management. What are the Guidelines about? These Guidelines provide the way to design an easy-to-adopt sustainable urban water management strategy with a subcatchment focus, describing the actions to take and the reasons for doing so at each step. The Guidelines show how to identify and define stormwater management priorities, collaborate with your community to create a plan, and finally implement the solutions identified through the planning process. The steps are adaptable so that management strategies for each subcatchment or other planning unit can be based on the physical and social character of the area, including competing land use requirements and community needs. What can people learn? The 10 essential steps identified through the research as necessary for successful implementation of sustainable water practices are presented. Each step provides a case study of Marrickville Council’s experience in carrying out that step during the research project. These Guidelines provide local government with a model for:
Planning Marrickville’s SubcatchmentsCouncil is encouraging everyone in the community to get involved in managing water sustainably. To do this, Marrickville Council is focusing its water planning and management at a local ‘subcatchment’ level. There are 22 subcatchments (local watersheds) in Marrickville where all the rain falling into that local area flows to the same waterway - Cooks River or Port Jackson. Council is working to create management plans for each subcatchment by 2012. The management plans are designed to target the specific needs of each community with its unique land use, demographic and environmental issues. Subcatchment planning includes detailed profiling of the subcatchments to help understand the social, physical and organisational contexts that shape the way planning is carried out. So far, this has been done for three Marrickville Subcatchments. Community working groupsCommunity working groups in each subcatchment work directly with Marrickville Council to develop and implement a vision and plan for water in their local area. Illawarra Road Subcatchment Water Working GroupThe Illawarra Road Sustainable Water Working Group is made up of local residents of the Illawarra Road Subcatchment in Marrickville South. Members of this group, Council, along with others involved in this area developed the Illawarra Road Community Water 2050 Vision and goals to achieve the vision. The Illawarra Road Subcatchment Management Plan includes the action plan to achieve the vision and goals. The Group works in partnership with Council to implement the sustainable water practices in their Subcatchment Management Plan. It worked with Council on the revised Illawarra Road Subcatchment Management Plan that shows all the achievements made so far. Illawarra Road Community Water Vision 2050

Tennyson Street SubcatchmentPlanning for the Tennyson Street Subcatchment in Dulwich Hill started in January 2008. The subcatchment community has been working with Marrickville Council and other local land managers to build a neighbourhood vision and subcatchment plan for a sustainable water future. In July and August 2008, residents, community groups and businesses from the subcatchment created the Tennyson Street Subcatchment Vision for 2050 and worked with Council and other government agencies to identify what everyone - government, individuals, business and the community - has to do to make a sustainable water future a reality. Eastern Channel East SubcatchmentThe Eastern Channel East (EC East) Subcatchment is located in south Newtown, Enmore, and St Peters. Drainage from this area flows to Cooks River. Eastern Channel East Subcatchment planning is being carried out in partnership with the Cooks River Sustainability Initiative (CRSI). In June 2008, planning began when community water surveys were sent to every household. Council now has a good understanding of the social context for local water planning including:
