Wheels In MotionWheels in Motion: Documentary premiere

Tuesday 1 September 2009

Wheels in Motion revisits the campaign by the members of the Sydney Bus Museum and local residents to protect the historic Tempe tram depot site from redevelopment and preserve a significant vintage bus collection. The film highlights a part of Marrickville’s industrial and cultural heritage that may be little known and underappreciated.

As part of the launch of the film you can travel onboard a vintage double decker bus to the view the film at Dendy Cinema, 261 King Street, Newtown. Buses will be departing from the Sydney Bus Museum, Tempe, Tuesday 1 September 2009 at 6.15pm sharp for the 7pm screening.

Marrickville Contemporary Art Prize 2009Marrickville Contemporary Art Prize 2009 (MCAP'09)

The Marrickville Contemporary Art Prize celebrates and acknowledges excellence and innovation in the visual arts from artists within the Marrickville local government area.

Works will be on show at both the Chrissie Cotter Gallery (CCG) Pidcock Street, Camperdown, and At The Vanishing Point Gallery (ATVP), 565 King Street, Newtown. The Open Award is showing at ATVP gallery, with the presentation being held on Friday 11 September 6-9pm. The Student Award is showing at CCG, with the presentation taking place on Friday 4 September 6-9pm at CCG.

The public get their chance to cast their votes in the People’s Choice Awards which will be announced at Artist Talks sessions at both galleries - CCG on Saturday 26 September from 2-4pm (Student award) and at ATVP on Sunday 27 September from 2-4pm (Open award). This is a great chance to meet the artists and talk with them about the artworks on show.

Sydney Underground Film FestivalSydney Underground Film Festival

The Sydney Underground Film Festival is back at The Factory Theatre, 105 Victoria Road, Marrickville, from Thursday 10 - Sunday 13 September. The Festival will include films from USA, UK, France, India, Germany, Austria, Canada, Japan and Italy, including the much-anticipated film, The Yes Men Fix the World, Jennifer M. Kroot’s documentary It Came From Kuchar and an exclusive screening of John Water’s Pink Flamingos in Odorama.

Wheels In MotionCut + Paste: Sustainable Craft Fest and Makers' Market

Friday 11 - Sunday 13 September 2009

Crafting in the context of environmental and economic concerns, Cut + Paste takes traditions of craft and re-use and pastes them into the here and now for a three day craftacular at The Red Rattler, 6 Faversham Street, Marrickville, from Friday 11 - Sunday 13 September 2009. Visit the Makers Market on Saturday and Sunday to pick up some of the best fair, sustainable and handmade goods made locally, or take part in one of the many free workshops.

Cut + Paste will be launched on Friday 11 September with a special presentation by guests from Women for Education, Freedom and Textiles. The festival will close with an evening of fresh organic food, film and fabulous performances translating the tactile to the stage.

Dance Around the World

Marrickville West Primary invites you to Dance Around the World on Saturday 19 September at the school from 11.30am to 4pm. Enjoy performances from students, their families, community groups and professional dancers. The event also features food, rides and stalls. Art JamArt Jam

Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September 2009. Exhibition of works Saturday 19 September.

Sticky with promise and sweet as, Art Jam is inviting young people between the ages of six and 12 to take part in art, installation, sculpture, screen printing and mural workshops at Tortuga Studios, an artist-run industrial warehouse space at 31 Princes Highway, St Peters.

The workshops are to be held on 12-13 September 2009 as part of the Marrickville Cultural Festival. All work produced in the workshops will be exhibited in the inaugural Art Jam exhibition, Saturday 19 September from 3pm at Tortuga Gallery.

Lolo Lovina will perform a free concert from their amazing Gypsy Caravan Stage on Friday 25 September at 7pm in Newtown Square, Enmore Road, Newtown.

Lolo Lovina’s music is best described as ‘an intoxicating brew of Gypsy mayhem’. The Marrickville-based group has played at events such as Brian Eno's Luminous Festival, The Sydney Opera House and at Brisbane Festival in the world-famous Spiegeltent.

The staging of the event is innovative, as ‘Lolo’ is the only caravan stage in the Southern hemisphere.

Marrickville Street Festival is the one of largest annual festivals in the Marrickville area, drawing crowds of more than 50,000 people each year to celebrate Marrickville's cultural diversity.

The event is a feast for the senses - with live entertainment and cultural performances spread across 2 stages, a dedicated Kids Space with free workshops and performances, international foods, arts and crafts, displays, rides, over 100 stalls, and much more.

Scandal, Crime and Corruption for History Week

Sunday 6 September and Wednesday 9 September 2009

To celebrate History Week, Marrickville Council is holding a number of tours that explore the dark and mysterious underbelly of the local area. Focusing on the theme Scandal, Crime and Corruption, the tours will include a walk along Cooks River from Kendrick Park Tempe to Mahoney Reserve, Marrickville.

The tours will be held on Sunday 6 September and Wednesday 9 September. Participants are required to meet at Kendrick Park, Princes Highway, Tempe at 10am.  The tour will finish at 12 noon at Mahoney Reserve, Marrickville. Bookings are essential and there will be a limit of 30 people for each tour. These tours are not suitable for children. A separate Crime Night exploring the murkier history of the Marrickville area will be held at the Petersham Town Hall, 107 Crystal Street, Petersham on Thursday 10 September at 6.30pm.
