2008 Community Survey

Summary and Results

Marrickville Council wished to examine community attitudes and satisfaction on a broad range of issues, and at the same time provide residents with an opportunity to help shape the future of Marrickville by providing input to the Annual Management Plan. Issues included:

  • Lifestyle and development
  • The environment
  • Council's performance
  • Communication, consultation and citizen service

A survey of 600 residents in the Marrickville Local Government Area, with names selected electronically to form a demographically representative sample, was undertaken by telephone. The survey was conducted during the period 1 December to 15 December from 4:30pm to 8:30pm, Monday to Thursday.

The survey was conducted by independent researcher Micromex who, together with Marrickville Council, developed a questionnaire based primarily on a survey form used in the 2005, 2006 and 2007 community surveys.

The survey report reveals that:

  • 77% of respondents were satisfied with the overall delivery of Council services (18% Neither, 5% Dissatisfied), which is higher than in 2007 (73%) and significantly higher than the developed LGA Benchmark.

When comparing the residents’ satisfaction ratings with the 2007 results, Micromex identified that residents’ perceptions of Council’s performance had increased markedly, particularly in relation to:

  • Overall satisfaction with Council’s performance in the last 12 months
  • A Council that informs residents about its activities and services
  • A Council that works in the best interests of the community
  • A Council that is effective and efficient
  • A Council that encourages community involvement in decision making

An issue that is prominent in this survey which requires attention is the concern relating to cleanliness, littering and dumping of rubbish. This is seen by the residents as a high priority area that Council could improve on.

The ‘community’ aspect of Marrickville LGA and the support by Council is once again evident in the criteria residents consider that Council is doing well and should be continued. These include waste and recycling, festivals and cultural events, and parks.

Marrickville Council thanks citizens who participated in the surveys.

2007 Survey and Ratepayers Mini-Survey

In addition to the 2007 Community Survey, Council also conducted for the first time a mini-survey of ratepayers, sent with the October 2007 rate notice. The survey included two key questions from the 2007 Community Survey (telephone): 'What is your overall satisfaction with Marrickville Council?" and "What do you think should be Marrickville Council's highest priority in the next 12-18 months?"

Over 550 responses were received to January 2008. The survey of ratepayers indicates good levels of satisfaction with the Council by ratepayers of 65% (compared to the general 2007 Community Survey of 73%).
