Marrickville Medal for ConservationThe 2009 Marrickville Medal for Conservation was won by the Crago Flour Mill, located at 3 Gladstone Street, Newtown. The prestigious Marrickville Medal - which recognises outstanding conservation, restoration and renovation works in the Marrickville local government area - was presented at Petersham Town Hall on Wednesday 15 April 2009. The Crago Flour Mill was recognised for its transformation from an industrial building to a group of commercial suites aimed at creative businesses. The owner and architects Allen Jack + Cottier have retained and restored important original artefacts, including line shafting and drive belts, and clearly distinguished between old and new building materials. The result is an exciting building that contributes to the architectural character of Newtown and represents the spirit of conservation and heritage celebrated through the Marrickville Medal. The Highly Commended Award was presented to 22 Dixson Street, Dulwich Hill, which is located in the Abergeldie Estate Conservation Area and was designed by Emily Knight Design. The inter-war house has been faithfully restored with contemporary yet sympathetic additions. Commendations were given to 26 Fairmount Street, Dulwich Hill, which was designed by RedShift Architecture, and 27 Blairgowrie Street, Dulwich Hill, both of which had positive impacts on their streetscapes. The People's Choice Award - decided by an online vote - was won by 15 Oxford Street, Petersham, for restoration works to a Victorian terrace.
