About the Archives

What Are the Archives?
Marrickville Council Archives holds the surviving historical records of former Municipal Councils whose boundaries now fall within the Marrickville Council local government area in addition to the records of Marrickville Council.

Records held are from the former St Peters Municipal Council  1871 - 1948 and Petersham Municipal Council 1872 - 1948. These two Councils merged with Marrickville Council, which was incorporated in 1861, in 1949 after the introduction of the Local Government (Areas) Act of 1948.

In 1968 Marrickville Council gained sections of Camperdown and Newtown, south of Parramatta Road and west of King Street, to form what is today the present day boundaries of the Marrickville Local Government Area. However, few records for these areas are held in Council's Archives.

Researching the Archives
Many researchers who visit the Archives are interested in finding historical information on a home or property. This can include determining the property's age, if the property had a name and who may have owned the property over a period of time.

Rate and valuation records held in the Archives are an excellent resource for this type of research.

The Council's Archives also hold records which are a valuable resource for family, social and local historians. These records include correspondence files, Council minutes and building and sub division registers.
