Accessing the Archives
Visit the Archives
Marrickville Council's Archival Reference Centre is open to members of the Public every Tuesday.
During this time the Council Archivist is available to help you locate information from within the Archives. Facilities are also available for producing photocopies and microfiche prints of documents where appropriate.
Write to the Archives
A paid written inquiry service is available for those unable to visit the Archives in person.
Conditions of Access
Most Council records which have been transferred to the Archives are available to members of the Public for research.
Public access to records held in the Archives shall be in accordance with the following conditions:
- Use of original records will be under the direct control and supervision of the Archivist. The Archivist may refuse to grant access to records if it is possible that the records will be placed in physical danger if issued.
- Any copying will be subject to the copyright restrictions and the physical condition of the records.
- Researchers will not be permitted access to the records storage areas and the staff work areas.
- Members of the Public desiring access to the Archives will need to complete an application for a Readers' ticket.
- All visitors are required to register their name, address, nature of business and times of arrival and departure.
- Writing instruments, other than pencils, are not to be used in the Archival Reference Centre. The consumption of food and drink is not allowed in the reading room. Smoking is not permitted in any area of the building.
- Original material must be viewed in the reading room, and is not to be removed by researchers for any purpose. If a record has been copied onto another format (e.g. microfiche, aperture card, photocopy or CD ROM etc) the copy will issued in preference to the original record.
- Members of the public requesting to view building or development application plans must make this request through the Citizen Service Centre and a CRMS form will be issued.
- Members of the public wishing to obtain copies of plans from development and building applications must also see the Citizen Service Centre.
- Conditions of access to individual series of records will be stipulated on the Council Records Series documentation or Accession forms.
- Some records may be restricted for the following reasons: to protect the privacy of individuals identified in the records; information of special commercial sensitivity or other sensitivity to the Council; and information passed to the Council in confidence by another party.
- Where a member of the public feels that access has been unreasonably denied or limited, an application should be made through the Council's public officer for a reconsideration.
