Discounts for Pensioners

Council provides a rebate of $250 per year on rates payments to eligible pensioners.

To be eligible for a full year rebate, the date the person becomes an eligible pension must be prior to 1 July in any rating year.

New pensioners after 1 July will receive a rebate proportionate to the number of full quarters remaining in the rating year after the day when the person becomes an eligible pensioner (Local Government Act 1993, Section 575). This is illustrated in the table below:

Date of pension being granted Rebate within rating year
Before 1 July of rating year Full rebate
Before 1 October 75% rebate
Before 1 January 50% rebate
Before 1 April 25% rebate
Between 1 April and 30 June No rebate

When a person ceases to be an eligible pensioner, dies or sells the property, a proportion of the rebate granted for the year is written back as payable. This applies in the same manner as a granted rebate; the write back will equal the number of full quarters remaining in the year.

Eligible pensioner verification will be undertaken by Marrickville Council prior to Annual Rate Levy and each subsequent Rate Instalment.

Marrickville Council has provided an additional Voluntary Pensioner Rebate of $54.70 since 2004/05. This additional rebate is limited to existing pensioners and is not available to new pensioners.

To obtain a discount

  • Customers are required to visit Council's Citizens' Service Centre and bring their current Rates Notice (if available) and Pensioner Concession card which will be photocopied. To be eligible the details on the card must match the property owner on the rates notice; and

  • An application form is to be completed. Please remember citizens who become eligible between 1 April and 1 July are not entitled to any rebate within the current rating year.

You can download and print the application form here if you wish to fill this out in advance.

The rebate will then be calculated based on the number of full quarters left in the year relevant to the "effective date" (date of grant) on the Pensioner Concession Card. The rebate is calculated by dividing the annual rebate allowable by four and multiplying the result by the remaining full quarters left in the financial year.
