Waste to Art Competition for Schools

Marrickville Council is hosting the Waste to Art Competition and is inviting high school and TAFE students in the Marrickville Council area to participate.

This exciting and innovative challenge invites students to turn unwanted items into an art form of their choice, from sculptures to clothing. Categories include one of the following: sculpture, craftwork, video or a functional object made out of recycled materials.

The purpose of the project is to encourage the concept of reduce, reuse & recycle whilst challenging attitudes about waste and what valuable items are thrown away.

Entries should be submitted to Council, no later than 26th October 2009 via mail. Please ensure all submissions have the student's name and class on their work and attention the submissions to:

Prizes include:

  • 1st prize - $250 Dick Smith Electronics gift voucher
  • 2nd prize - $150 Dick Smith Electronics gift voucher
  • 3rd prize - $100 Dick Smith Electronics gift voucher

The school with the most number of entries will win a $500 Dick Smith Electronics voucher.

The winning school and entries will be selected by the Mayor, General Manager and a representative of the Resource Recovery Services section. Winning entries will be announced and published in the December edition of Council's quarterly magazine Marrickville Matters.

Terms and conditions:

  • The Waste To Art Competition is open to high school students in the Marrickville Local Government Area only.
  • Entrants may submit only one artwork in each appropriate category. All artwork in each category must demonstrate the re-use of waste.
  • The results of the competition will be announced in the December edition of Marrickville Matters - Council's quarterly publication.
  • Council will contact the competition winners' school and ask the Principal to notify the winning students.
  • All entrants grant permission to the organisers to publish &/or broadcast the names and photographs of the finalists and the winners through print and electronic media.
  • Judges and their immediate families are not eligible to enter. 

All artwork must:

  • Include a brief description of your composition, the materials and inspiration of your artwork. This should be included on a separate paper and submitted with your artwork (Maximum of one A4 page)
  • Video should be no longer than 10 minutes
  • Be safe for public exhibition
  • Be appropriately packaged for delivery and storage
  • Not exceed a size limit: 2 dimensional - 1x1 metres & 3 dimensional - 1x1x1 metres
  • Not exceed a weight limit of 20kgs.

 

'All Creatures Great and Small'
'All Creatures Great and Small' was made by Michael Ferris by using old fencing wire and copper wire sourced from the Waste Management centre.

'City Scape' was made by Emily Burke using pieces from old computers

'Coke Can Car' was made by Oliver Andronicus and was made from aliminium cans and bits and pieces from old computers.
