English Conversation Class

The ability to speak English can benefit day-to-day life, from going to the shops to making phone calls and catching a bus. Working with experienced English teachers, these weekly conversation classes improve English fluency and introduce you to new people from the local community.

Class details

  • Classes are held weekly and run during school term dates
  • Classes run at two levels: beginner and intermediate
  • Classes run for two hours and full attendance is compulsory
  • Homework tasks are compulsory

Term dates

  • Term 1: 30 January - 15 April
  • Term 2: 30 April - 8 July
  • Term 3: 23 July - 30 September
  • Term 4: 15 October - 16 December

Class locations and times

You may choose one class at Marrickville Library only, however you have the option of choosing additional classes at other branches.

Beginner: Tuesday 1pm-3pm
Beginner: Wednesday 1pm-3pm
Intermediate: Monday 1pm-3pm
Intermetiate: Friday 1pm-3pm
Intermediate: Sunday 1.30pm 3.30pm

  • Dulwich Hill Library

Beginner: Monday 1pm-3pm

Beginner: Thursday 1pm-3pm

  • St Peters/Sydenham Library

Beginner: Tuesday 10.30am-12.30pm

  • Stanmore Library

Beginner: Friday 10.30am-12.30pm


  • Booking is required before attending class
  • Registration is open to library members aged 18+ for whom English is a second language
  • Register your place in class each term
  • Students must advise the tutor (or library) in advance if a class is to be missed, as there is a waitlist
  • Children are not allowed into class

How do I register?

  • Present your library card at any branch and select the classes you would like to attend
  • Library staff will register and confirm your place or advise is you are on a waitlist
  • If you are on a waitlist, we will call you when space becomes available

Basic English writing class

Need help with writing a letter, filling out a form, creating a resume, or making a job application? Attend weekly Basic English Writing classes to help improve English writing skills for everyday tasks. 

Starts Thursday 1 February.

  • Weekly Thursday, 6pm-7.30pm, Marrickville Library call 9335 2173 for bookings

Community educational seminars

Marrickville Library holds regular educational bilingual information sessions or workshops in the six community languages of Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Portuguese, Spanish and Vietnamese. Topics include physical well-being, mental health, legal, environment and welfare. The talks are presented in partnership with government departments and agencies, professional and community organisations.
