Spring Garden Competition

Important notice

Please be advised that the Spring Garden Competition is currently under review, in light of the amalgamation of Ashfield, Leichhardt and Marrickville councils in May 2016.

If you wish to be contacted when we have further information about the future of the competition, please contact Customer Service Centre on (02) 9392 5000.

Council's Spring Garden Competition runs yearly. Residents and businesses are invited to enter this great community event – whether a beginner gardener or a horticulturalist, whether you have a courtyard garden or a large backyard.

Since 2006 all entrants have been automatically entered in a water-efficient garden category, with judges looking for water-saving measures and sustainable garden design.

The competition categories are:

  • Best Small Garden
  • Best Large Garden
  • Best Front Garden
  • Best Courtyard Garden
  • Best Native Garden
  • Best Home Unit Garden
  • Best Edible Garden
  • Best School or Childcare Centre
  • Best Commercial Garden
  • Water Efficiency Award
  • Best Nature Strip or Verge Garden*

* Ornamental plants only – no edible gardens. Only gardens that have been registered through Council's Sustainable Streets programme can enter this category. Those gardens that are not registered will not be given a judging slot. Visit the Sustainable Streets page to find Council's verge garden guidelines.

Entries for the 2014 Spring Garden Competition closed on Monday 31 August. Thank you to everybody who entered their garden!

Judging commences in September 2015. All gardens are judged on design and layout, plant selection, plant health and maintenance, and water savings measures used in the garden. Entrants will be notified by mail of the allocated judging time for their garden. Please include any specific details about your garden on your entry form which will assist Council's judge.

Winners and placegetters in all competition categories will be awarded a prize at an evening awards ceremony to be held in November 2015. All entrants are invited and encouraged to attend this event.

For further information please contact Council's Customer Service Centre on (02) 9392 5000.
